The New Jazz Thing Live on Jazz 88.3 FM San Diego Webcast KSDS-FM.org - Steve March Torme at 7:20 pm PT

Steve March TormeSteve March Torme will be on The New Jazz Thing Live tonight at 7:20 pm PT on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org. We'll be talking about his upcoming show at Humphrey's By The Bay Backstage Lounge this coming Saturday, May 3, 2003 at 7:00 pm and his new release "The Essence of Love". Some of the things we'll try to get into include his choice of standards over originals for the new release, thoughts on how dad Mel Torme's coverage of standards may have influenced him, and what folks heading to the show this weekend can expect. Steve was with us about a year ago and his unique sense of humor led to an interesting discussion...hopefully more of the same is in store for this evening!

We'll also be dipping into several jazz stories in the today's UT Night and Day section, including Dave Holland, Red Holloway, and this quote from Steve March Torme,

""I'm too young to have been brought up on Jimmy van Heusen," said TormÈ, who makes his San Diego debut as a headliner at Humphrey's Lounge Saturday with his trio featuring pianist Steve Rawlins. "Why is there this rule that if you sing jazz you have to sing standards? We've had a great deal of opposition trying to get airplay with the new stuff.

"I'm not stupid enough to keep fighting this, which is why we did this album of standards," TormÈ said. "Not surprisingly, radio programmers feel comfortable putting this one into rotation. Do I feel like I'm coming back home musically? Not really. I love the songs, and I love singing them, but if I was coming back home I'd be singing Todd Rundgren and Hall and Oates. I was brought up on pop music."

Lot's of new music and other news from this past week will be shared from 6 to 9 pm PT. Stay tuned!!
