2003.09.04 - The New Jazz Thing on Jazz 88 - Alex Skolnick Rocks The New!

Join the fun tonight when we get together at Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and worldwide web cast at http://KSDS-FM.org from 6 to 9 pm PT for all kinds of New Jazz music, the latest from the Jazz world on The New Jazz Thing weblog, an update on The Jazz In Steely Dan project (2 guests confirmed), and guitarist Alex Skolnick rockin' the part live from Tucson, Arizona at 7:20 pm PT.

[Later...] What great music I'm so lucky to choose from and play! From locals Holly Hoffman and Mike Woffard kicking it off in the band Fluteology, Stacey Kents shimering vocals on The Trolley Song, great new music from legend Ron Carter, and that killer rockin' blistering speed penultimate (been wanting to use that word) set of Jaco B.B. / James Muller's Thrum (which I'm totally impressed with...gotta talk to him on air) / our upcoming The Jazz In Steely Dan guest Walt Weiskopf. And top that off with discovering the music and thoughts of Alex Skolnick in tunes and interview and being able to share that with all the folks who dug it (and there were lots of calls afterward). It was a great night. Here are the tunes...

Alex Skolnick Live On The New Jazz Thing Tonight, September 4, 2003

Guitarist Alex Skolnick, who will be in town this Monday, September 8th, 2003 at Canes in San Diego, will be joining me on the air Live tonight from Tucson, Arizona. Alex has got a great sound and on his latest album, Goodbye to Romance: Standards For a New Generation, he takes on some unheard-of-in-jazz-circles material (which is so totally New I can't control myself) like tunes by Kiss, Aerosmith, Scorpions, and Ozzy. He's also got a great story to tell of how a Thrash Metal guitar god takes his already legendary solos in new directions with discovery and exploration of Jazz.

Alex played South by Southwest this year and looks like he pleased lots of different folks,

"Alex Skolnick was once the fire-and-brimstone guitarist with Testament, yet here he was, neat and trim, before a packed house of jazzbos and hangbangers alike, leading a straight-up trio in Austin's premier jazz cellar.

The trio closed with Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the audience having chosen it over a Deep Purple tune. Skolnick pulled out the stops, fidgeting with his gadgets and pedals, and to the howling delight of the adoring crowd, shredded the room with loud waves of feedback wrenched from his instrument. Afterward, Skolnick was gracious in thanking his fans, lauding Austin, and promising to return in the fall. Quite gracious, indeed, for a former and unapologetic metalhead."

We're gonna be rockin' tonight on TNJT!

Dude Auctions Off On-Line Purchased Digital Tune. What a Concept!

Via our friends at NewsScan comes the story of a guy who is auctioning off a digital tune he purchased via iTunes, which raises lots of interesting issues, including this one,

"Consumers can resell CDs purchased in a record shop, but what about digital music files downloaded from an online store?"

This will totally be a story to follow-up on and see where it goes. And the tune which was probably bought for 99 cents is up to $15,099...ain't that strange!

Long live the New music biz!!

NYTimes: Universal to Cut Prices of Its CD's

BFD, says I. Music fans have already bought their old favorites on CD, so there's not going to be a lot of recycling of old catalog. And the younger folks aren't really going to change their habits much, maybe some will by the latest Mega-Star hit or another wannabe Mega-Star disc because of the lower price, but that's going to be pretty limited.

Here's the real angle on this story...

"Some of the research on older consumers shows that "not finding what they want is more of a reason for not buying than pricing," said Russ Crupnick, vice president of the NPD Group, a market research firm. "They still need to put out content that's appealing to people," he said, referring to the record companies."

Yep. By relying and nurturing the Mega-Star, there are just not enough folks given the chance to get their music out and on CD. That's a-changin' now that musicians will soon be able to roll their own distribution networks (website) and sell digital versions of their songs cheaply.

Witness the death-gasp of the old music business. Long live the New music biz!!

Walt Weiskopf And The Jazz In Steely Dan Coming Up Live on Jazz 88 September 25, 2003

WaltWeiskopf.jpgWalt Weiskop, killer Jazz man and currently touring with Steely Dan, is our first confirmed guest for The Jazz In Steely Dan - Live on Jazz 88, September 25, 2003. Right on Walt!

We've got lots to learn about Walt and we'll start tonight on the Live show with a least a tune or two from the discs we have in the Jazz 88 library, a quick Google search, and this quote from an AllAboutJazz.com article on Walt,

"Walt Weiskopf is easily one of the most mature and fully individualistic saxophonists and composers to come along in the last 10 years. Possibly because of the fact that he chooses to work within the mainstream tradition (read: not outlandish enough to appeal to the avant hipsters) and record for the small Dutch-based Criss Cross Jazz label, Weiskopf is not widely known among everyday jazz circles, but it seems that those who have sampled his brilliance are uniformly enthralled with his vociferous approach."

Deidre Rodmans New Disc Simple Stories Releasing On September 23, 2003

deidre_head_web_90x126.jpgLittle Miss Biddy Deidre Rodman, long time friend of TNJT, sends email greetings and a heads-up on her new disc, "Simple Stories" (I think I scooped almost everyone with the title). Here's how Deidre puts it on her website's Projects page,

    Deidre Rodman, piano/melodica/compositions
    Tony Malaby, tenor/soprano sax
    Russ Johnson, trumpet
    Bob Bowen, bass
    Mark Ferber, drums

Our first album, "Sun is Is", was released in August, 2001 on the Sunnyside label. We recorded another record for Sunnyside this April,13, & 14 at Bennett Studios in Englewood, NJ to be released September 23, 2003. Luciana Souza will be singing on a few tracks so we're excited about that! The quintet will also be doing a tour to the Northwest in October of this year-check back for details. We did one last year and it was soooo beautiful..

She's also been busy with my favorite swingin' gal group, the Lascivious Biddies, and other summer fun. You can bet you will be hearing her reaching compositions, searching piano / melodica playing, and most nice voice on the Live show very soon! Maybe we can even have the Biddies back on for another musical accompaniment!!

Garage A Trois Coming To The Live Show on Jazz 88 Thursday, September 18, 2003

Looks like we've got the go ahead for a Live interview on September 18, 2003 with a band I would never picture in the coordinated costumage below, Garage A Trois

    joggers.jpg

If you've tuned into the show the last month, I've been playing the playing quite a bit from their killer rockin' neuvo-fusionistic New disc, Emphasizer, which is getting quite a bit of web coveragethis one from AllAboutJazz.com,

"When was the last time you had fun listening to a jazz record?

I mean the type of music you would make if you were a musician yourself. Music that draws from all your collective listening habits and years of first AM, then FM, radio dialing.

Garage a Trois is just such a band.

Their concept of mish-mashing musics is not new. Charlie Hunter formed T.J. Kirk to blend the unique music of Thelonious Monk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and James Brown. Skerik played in the short-lived freedom jazz/funk band Ponga, responsible for perhaps the best collision of jazz and technology to date. Their self-titled Ponga (Loose Groove 1999) is well worth the search."

I'm going to have to hit up Mr. Skerik for a taste of that one. More hits to come as the interview approacheth.

Side Note: Why do websites like the Garage A Trois one linked to above continue to use frames? If I want to link to something on the site, like the Emphasizer page above, they make me link to page that doesn't offer you reader's any of the rest of the site's navigation. You see what I want you to, but the site doesn't really get a chance to speak and show you anything else. Not my fault. They aren't the only one and I try to bring it up anytime I see...as a public service clue!
