Living On The Edge Of The Sea and the Desert - The Change The sea weather decends tonight. Moon out through alternating cloud puffs and high-lighted deep blue. Cool to the post-show-hype skin. Cool to the 'garbage and recycle out for Friday, 1 (fire) day delayed pickup' hyped skin. The cool breeze blowing from the sea. Reminding the closeness of the desert. The Santa Ana. Hot to the skin. Fuel to the fire. The worst (or best) of mother nature. Living on the edge of the sea and the desert.
Music can be that way too. Thanks Deidre! |

Deidre Rodman Live on The New Jazz Thing on Jazz 88 Tonight at 8:00 pm PT Deidre Rodman will be joining us tonight at 8:00 pm PT on The New Jazz Thing on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and world-wide webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org.We're going to really be getting into her new disc, Simple Stories (check out the MP3 samples), which is a fully reaching follow-up to her 2001 release, Sun Is Us. Here's an outline of some thoughts of mine on the tunes and some of the thoughts and questions raised for me. Terry Teachout gave Simple Stories a Quick Spin in the Washington Post and like what he heard...
"...her compositions are far more than just props for aimless blowing. Some are songs (Rodman is also a talented lyricist), others large-scale compositions notable for their high melodic profiles. The influence of rock on pieces like "Sleeping Ground" (sung to perfection by Luciana Souza, who sits in on three cuts) is unmistakable, yet you don't doubt for a moment that you're listening to jazz. " Washington Post! Nice press D!! Jenn Hubbard in the Idaho State University Bengal had a nice write up from the Quintet's recent tour of the Northwest,
" "My life is full because I've had always what I could want and it is so productive and busy and makes me happy. It is fluid because I like to go and explore wherever the music takes me. It is unplanned." I can hear the home town folks going wild now!
Join me tonight as we catch up with a great light in Jazz with an almost boundless potential. |

Learn about Capoeira Resistencia on The New Jazz Thing Live Tonight on Jazz 88 Capoeira Resistencia, a San Diego branch / center / school for this art form, is having what looks to be a big party in town with their 1st Batizado, Friday October 31 through Sunday, November 2. If the event is still happening, due to all the fire-related changes, we will be talking to someone to find out more in the 6 pm PT hour on tonight's show on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM, webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org. For all of us just getting to know what this is all about this, here's something from their website...
"Capoeira is a brazilian martial art that is rapidly growing all over the world. Capoeira has been described as a martial art disguised as a dance. In reality it encompasses much more. It is a unique and uplifting cultural experience that brings together beauty and power. Capoeira develops mental balance and physical conditioning, and is a combination of dance, theatre, music, art and self defense."
It's also a big sport in Brazil and described with terms like game, roda, professor, baptism (I think that's what a Batizado is for), and other things that seem to add a religious schooling feel to it. We'll explore that and any other sides that come up. And if there's dance involved, there must be music, so we'll see what we can do with that! |
