UnSilent Night in San Diego, December 13, 2003, 7 pm

Miff Mole of Jazz 88 fame has just posted news of this year's most cool Yule event, UnSilent Night, coming up Saturday, December 13, 7 pm, in San Diego's Gaslamp District. I will quote completely here for archival purposes. This is an event to be experienced,

You can read a description of Unsilent Night but there is no way to really dig it unless you do it. Here it is in a nutshell...New York composer Phil Kline created Unsilent Night as an electronic music caroling party, an outdoor ambient music piece for an infinite number of boom box tape players. For the second year it will be performed in San Diego, starting at the Gaslamp Trolley Station on Harbor Drive and winding through the streets of the Gaslamp to Horton Plaza.

Unsilent Night will happen on Saturday, December 13th. Meet at the Gaslamp Trolley Station at 5th and Harbor at 6:40pm, and at 7pm walk through the streets of San Diego's Gaslamp up to Horton Plaza. The whole walk takes about 40 minutes.

All you need to join in the sound is a portable tape player with fresh batteries, a cassette tape of the music will be loaned to you. Send an email to reserve a copy for the walk. If you don't have a tape player you are still welcome to join the procession and just enjoy the music. Unsilent Night is kid-friendly, so bring the whole family!

Parking downtown is #*%! so take the trolley!

To reserve a tape, contact Marcos Fernandes at 619-299-5371 or email sounds@accretions.com

Heed the parking wisdom above. Parking was so bad last year that I was not even able to participate, so get on board and get down there. Here's what Miff had to say about his Unsilencing last year,

"I have been a few places and I have seen a couple of things, but I can't remember ever feeling like I was Right In The Middle Of It like I was at Unsilent Night. The music came out of the cassette playing devices (15) and blended into one cloud of sound that roamed from the Trolley Station up to Symphony Hall, thru Horton Plaza, and finally, ethereally, each machine ran out of sound and we dispersed in every direction available."

For a taste of where the event can go, check out the video / audio of UnSilent Santas. Most definitely an event that begs to be captured at least somehow in pictures and video, so we'll attempt to do our part...and take part. Should be fun!
