I Learned About Elmer Berstein from Eric Olsen at Blogcritics
Eric Olsen: Film Music Great Elmer Berstein Die

Eric should have been on the show tonight. Would next week be too late to celebrate what reads and looks to be an unbelieveable career of New Things?! And New Jazz Things too!!!

""How is he thought of by the other members of the music community? With deep respect and a lot of envy. Somehow, he has managed to stay on the cutting edge throughout his career. His innovative concept for 'The Man With The Golden Arm' was a ground breaking, all-jazz score[~]and a Hollywood first. Previously, jazz was treated as a specialty item. He proved it could sustain mood for an entire film.""

Man, there is so much to learn about all of the great musicians who have understood jazz, and used jazz, and it's soulful, root-ful, expression of our common experience, making the music of the jazz musician so relevant to all of us influenced by films and other New expressions.

Eric has an unique blogging style, at least on these obit or "Great Man" pieces, where he puts together lots of copied text from totally great and adventurouse sources, which he liberally links to.

P.S. Props to San Diego Brewing Company, the geo-location for this post, for pouring the post-show brew: San Diego's Ballast Point Dorado (I think they only do a 'Double', but the thin beer wench swears it only 'Dorado'). Effects of Beer 1 indicate otherwise...

At http://dizzyssandiego.com/calendar.php">Dizzy's on the 25th,

"Wed Aug 25: NYC drummer Neal Smith with a West Coast Quintet featuring L.A. tenor saxophonist Tom Catanzaro, David Negrete alto saxophone, Chris Mees bass & pianist Josh Nelson 8PM - $10 cover ($7 students)"

Here's a camera phone picture of the CD of New Brian Lynch tunes on which Neal plays. I attempted to take it in order to have something to look at after I closed the CD drawer, with the CD...and the CD label with the only list of the tunes ON the CD. Thank goodness Neal knew...

Chris Mees, without a website to link to, who will be playing with Neal on the Dizzy's date on the 25th and Greene Music in MiraMar on the 26th, is stopping by in Hour 1 to tell us about the gigs, how he met Neal, and other interesting personal Things. Hey...here he is...dressed for work!
