Improvisational Listening Performed At The 25th Playboy Jazz Festival Steve Eddy: Playboy is more than jazz, and that's just fine. Steve kind of glosses over the less technically Jazzy acts and highlights some of the more Jazzy from Day 1, Saturday, June 14, 2003 from the 25th Playboy Jazz Festival. And those Jazzy acts getting kudos includes Lizz Wright, Dave Holland, LA HomeGrown (Eubanks and Potter DID ROCK!), and L.A. County High School For The Arts Jazz Ensemble. Nice review of those acts. Right on Steve! The subtext (nice word VO) of the article is whether the festival is really 'Jazz' or not. And pretty much says, Who Cares, as long as we all have a good time. AMEN! But I'll quickly state that I think the variety of acts, totally highlighted by great musicianship by all, gives us a chance to exercise and perform our Improvisational Listening skills. As boys and girls experiencing the show, we must adjust every 40 minutes or so to a new sound, a new message, a new world viewpoint...lots of New Things. All in the course of 1 day (or 2 if you are as lucky as we were this weekend). That's the Real Thing about PBJF...it brings together 18K of folks who can (mostly) dig whatever is being presented for exactly what it's worth...and for it's Fun factor! Thanks Hef for throwing a great party! Day 1 pictures have been posted and Day 2 pictures are in the works!! Check out pre-show interviews by Lizz Wright, Boz Scaggs, Bobby Rodriquez, Darlene Chan (great show DC!) and others at the Playboy Jazz Festival Weblog!
