The 27th Playboy Jazz Festival opened up the climactic weekend at the Hollywood Bowl with Day 1, Saturday, June 11, 2005 and provided lots of great, varied, music and only those kind of moments that this one of a kind concert event always provides. "There have surely been individual sets in the Playboy Jazz Festival[base ']s 26-year history that were more incandescent or momentous than what we heard during the first of the event[base ']s two days at the Hollywood Bowl last Saturday (June 19). But the sheer bulk of good music [^] set after set [^] was something that doesn[base ']t happen very often. It was among the few times in recent memory when leaving your seat for any reason was a risk that required calculation. Call it wishful thinking, but I[base ']d swear that people were, on the whole, actually listening. Hell, I only saw one beach ball in the air!"
Kirk dude, you are sooo right! Day 1 totally rocked it Jazz-style! Maybe Brian Culbertson is a bit of stretch in the 'Jazz-style' category, but how could Darlene have known their smooth, but truly heartfelt stuff, would be competing with such consistently killer acts?! 2004 Playboy Jazz Festival - Day 1 - Wynton Holds Court at Hugh's Party!

Day 1 of the 2004 Playboy Jazz Festival lived up to all expectations with all aspects of this 2 day party rocking. Some heavy straight ahead Jazz sets by Charles McPherson, Coz of Good Music (James Carter wailed), and Wynton Marsalis confidently expressing his view that Jazz Lives! Hugh Masekela spoke from his world-soul, Yerba Buena shook their world-things, and Jose Rizo's Jazz on the Latin Side All Stars sent the party dancing home with visions of Day 2 in our heads.

We covered the day Live in many ways, so here are some of the other artifacts collected and synthesized in very minor ways...

2004 PBJF Day 1 - Live Camera Phone Pictures. These are in reverse order, with the last picture first. I didn't get much opportunity for audio posts during the day, with the 3 posts representing different approaches and inspirations: a wrap-up of the first 2 sets, setting up (without success) an improptu phone interview with Charles McPherson, and capturing the Savion Glover experience by phone. Not very post-worthy any, but examples of vision for this type of reporting experience. We'll see what happens with Day 2 today. Here's yesterday's first post... We met up with Sherry and Hubby (how he's best known to friends of TNJT) in their prime front-box, while my producer Jeff F. and I experienced quite a few different locals during the day. Dr. Jazz was in the house, talked with James Zollars of Savion's band about a TNJT Live appearance this week, chatted with Charles McPherson, met Hugh Masekela, buttonholed James Carter, talked branding with Tiffany Victoria Bradshaw, and said Hi to Jose Rizo. What a great day!!

To which he added his take on Tuesday afternoon's eathquake Thing (which I experienced seated and quickly footed with my partner in crime Marty in a conference room awaiting what turned out to be a fruitful and positive business / IT interaction this afternoon),
"Thanks for making my afternoon a wilder one (just felt the earthquake as I was drooling over the pic!)..."
So that was the earthquake and not the earth moving? Come on NetworkDudes staring over GuruDude's shoulder at his NetworkBabeFrameWorksataion. The earth moved and so did this bench backstage at the Hollywood Bowl last year, 2003 Playboy Jazz Festival - Day 1. And this weekend, we'll be going back north this coming weekend for the 2004 Playboy Jazz Festival. And we'll be coming Live with camera phone and audio blogs both Saturday and Sunday at The New Jazz Thing Moblog at http://TNJT.TextAmerica.com. In a like manner to what we did tonight via camera phone from OB... Witt's Spring, Arkansas Welcomes the Williams Brothers! The Carson, or 'OBsian' as we re-named it, is in the process of being located near Witt('s?) Spring, Arkansas, population 8, somewhere high above the warmer, sticker elevations of Wades days-of-yore in the plains of Russellville. And the whole town is getting prepped for the coming of the Bros and word has it a big down-home parade through the center of the county seat is planned in late summer. Or something like that. Anyway the place deep in the Arkansas hills looks like it's going to be pretty darn earthy, and somewhat habitable in the Fall (to my imagined bug-gone liking, locals will more than likely disagree...home sweet home...he says from the near-foot of Orchard, down OB way). This and other things kept our minds for a bit, pleasantries exchanged, and the next and now quickly recapped turn came down as I made my way down Sunset from OB. I went to Jazz 88 broadcast studios and library, downtown SD, capitalizing on a little extra time to add to my music research vaults, tunage from this Thursday's most righteous of interview line-ups...6 to 9 pm PT (Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM webcast http://Jazz88Online.com)...

Wynton Marsalis, the most widely known and influential Jazz player of my generation, continuing to create with this year's The Magic Hour. What an honor to chat Jazz with him! He's playing in San Diego on Friday. And the Playboy Jazz Festival this weekend. (pattern confirmed and validated). I ripped the Jazz from the library while shooting the Jazz chat with the Groove Master Ron Dhanifu pulling the late night Jazz 88 Ops shift. And I beat it back to Chaos. Where this rant may have siphoned enough steam to allow a couple hours of downtime. To which I retire. Keep on singing!

Charles McPherson, saxophonist and Jazz legend (and San Diegan), will be on TNJT Live on Jazz 88 next week, Thursday, May 27, 2004 at 7:20 pm PT. Charles is the real deal when it comes to Jazz saxophonists and it's a wonder I haven't had him on the show before, but we're going to make the most of our short time together. I wonder if he'll be coming down or not..Live in studio would be soooo coooool. Charles is also playing the 2004 Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, Saturday, June 19, 2004, so we'll chat about that upcoming date too. Right on!!

We'll be talking about his recent autobiography "Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela" and his upcoming performance at the Playboy Jazz Festival, June 19-20, 2004 at the Hollywood Bowl.
