The Bob Gibb Memorial Show - Big Band Brunch 2003.11.30 - Turn It Up Loud!
The Bob Gibb Memorial Show on Big Band Brunch is Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 10 am to Noon Pacific Time on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and world-wide webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org.
Vince Outlaw from The New Jazz Thing (Thursday evenings, 6 to 9 pm PT, on Jazz 88) will be hosting two hours of Big Band Brunch in honor of Bob Gibb, the longtime host of Big Band Brunch, who unexpectedly passed away on October 20, 2003. The show will feature big band sounds from Bob's final playlists, music from the Leo Adelman (L A) Octet, Mundell Lowe, and Betty Bennett as played at a memorial for Bob at the San Diego Musician's Union Hall on Sunday November 23, and remembrances from friends and Jazz 88 staff recorded at that same event. True to TNJT style, we'll also be playing tunes from the New big band releases in the Jazz 88 library, to show that the music Bob Gibb loved so much continues to remain a vital part of the ongoing Jazz music scene.
The Bob Gibb Memorial Weblog documents much of the material put together for the show, including images of Bob's final Big Band Brunch playlists, photos from the Musician's Union memorial show, Bob's Obituary in the San Diego Union Tribune, and MP3 files of recorded remembrances of Bob.
If you'd like to contribute a picture, remembrance, or other artifact about Bob, please use the Comment[] link at the bottom of this (or any) post or send me email at VO@TheNewJazzThing.com.
As Joe Kocherhans said and Bob Gibb exemplified, "Turn it up loud!"
Much Love...VO

The Last Big Band Brunch Playlists of Bob Gibb
I've posted the music playlists from Bob Gibb's 3 final Big Band Brunch Shows, October 5, 12, and 19, 2003. The October 19 playlist is especially poignant in that it was Bob's last day with us. He had his heart attack that evening and passed away the next day, October 20, 2003. I will be featuring music from each of these playlists on my Big Band Brunch - The Bob Gibb Memorial Show, Sunday, November 30, 2003.
Bob's 10/19/2003 Big Band Brunch Playlist (Click for more images.)
Those are the reverent hands of Miff Mole doing duty with Bob's last playlist. The playlist is what all DJ's fill out at sometime during or after their on-air shift on Jazz 88. About 2 weeks worth are kept in a binder in the air-booth to answer listener questions about the tunes played in previous days. They are rotated to a folder in the station office where they are kept for 2 months or so and then given the heave-ho. Kind of shame in some ways, as a piece of Jazz history is lost forever. I try to take a picture of each of mine for posterity. Miff Mole posts his textually online, linked to from the Creative Music page. We should all be so dutiful.

Anonymous Bob Gibb and Jazz 88 Fan - His Enthusiasm, His Knowledge, His Background
Anonymous Bob Gibb and Jazz 88 Fan (25s, 388KB MP3).
A very nice (and self-admitingly shy) lady approached me at the musicians union memorial for Bob last Sunday to share a few words about Bob. After a little coaxing and pledge of anonymity, she put her words down for us all, sharing the essence of what Bob was to his listeners,
"He brightened up my Sunday, every week, for years and years, and it wasn't just his music that he played, but his enthusiasm he put into it and his knowledge and background."
Nicely said. I have visions of opening my Big Band Brunch memorial show with that quote. It might work well, because she goes on to say,
"I'm a fan of about everything they play on Jazz 88."
Double nicely said!

The Bob Gibb Memorial Weblog
The Bob Gibb Memorial Weblog documents some of the artifacts compiled during the process of putting together a 2 hour memorial radio broadcast of Big Band Brunch, Sunday November 30, 2003 from 10 am to noon PT on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego by Vince Outlaw of The New Jazz Thing. The site currently contains text, photos, and audio postings that document some of Bob's work at Jazz 88 and the thoughts of those who knew him inside and outside of the station. While the goal is to archive the material compiled, it is hoped that others who knew or were inspired by Bob or the show he hosted for over 12 years, will send their thoughts for posting on this site.
Other remembrances can be sent to VO@TheNewJazzThing.com or use the Comment[] link on any of the posts on this site.
I didn't know Bob real well, but his influence on big band music at Jazz 88 is well known. He was very dedicated to his show and the music. But as you can tell from the things that people say about him, you can tell that he loved his music and his position in being able to share it with others. I would see Bob at the rare Jazz 88 meeting or get-together, but I would check out Big Band Brunch on Sunday's from 10 am to Noon whenever possible. He always had something interesting to say about the tunes.
Enough said...on with the show...or weblog!
Much Love...VO
P.S. For those interested in the technology side of things, this new weblog will feature syndication via RSS and will utilize RSS enclosures for downloadable artifacts such as MP3 files and Quicktime movies. This feature allows users of RSS News Aggregators to download these artifacts during off-hours to enable real-time experience (instead of long downloads before media plays). More about this will be coming.

The Bob Gibb Memorial - Sunday, November 23, 2003 - Pictures and Miff Mole's Thoughts
This is in two parts...
Pictures from The Bob Gibb Memorial, Sunday, November 23, 2003.
 Click picture to see more.
And a little audio, a bit that will more than likely make it on this Sunday's Big Band Brunch - The Bob Gibb Second Line Parade...(I don't know what to name it)...
Miff Mole's thoughts on Bob, at the event. (2.4MB MP3)
Miff pours out his heart about Bob. And that link was supposed to be a much more impressive experience for you all, but iMovie scaling up is sometimes unpredicable...as in this case.
There's lot of interesting stories about Bob, his last play lists at Jazz 88, tunes from the Memorial event at the Musician's Union. Stay tuned as we prep material for Sunday's special show, 11/30/2003 10 am to Noon, on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM and world-wide webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org.
