Video of Chuchito Valdes Interview For Jazz Live

Chuchito Valdes, with Laksar Reese translating, chats with Vince Outlaw before Jazz Live, Tuesday, October 10, 2006. He talked about his band-mates for Jazz Live, his famous family, including his Mom (the center of the family), his bands in Cuba, including Irakere, the importance of composing to him, and what's up for his future.

Note 1: I messed up the intro titles to that Google video displays a minor title in the presentation...the video is still all there. I guess they must show a frame that's about 8 seconds into the video as the presentation image. Something else to work on! (UPDATE: Fixed!)

Note 2: I'm playing around with Google Video and am not real happy with the fidelity of the video...probably I didn't upload a high-enough quality video. Anyway, I will take another shot at this and post an update if that looks better. (UPDATE: Fixed! At least I think it looks much better in the small version embedded in this page AND if you click this link or the little Google Video logo in the bottom of the embedded player, you can see a much bigger version with good quality video. Cool!)

VO's Highlights From the Chuchito Valdes Show

Wow...what a show tonight...here are some highlights...

  • Packed house! It's great to have lots of people for the shows and I'm sure the generosity of the San Diego City College World Cultures Program, providing free tickets helped bunches. But folks still had to reserve seats, so people told us they wanted to see this show. Excellent!
  • Jazz 88 supporters C.F. and Caroline Koehler coming in for the show. And...It's A Boy!! Congratulations...a new sailor is coming to SD!! And he'll grow up with lots of Jazz!!
  • My Jazz mentor, Jeff H., with Maria in tow, coming in to check out the show tonight! I don't think I've seen Jeff at a New Jazz Live yet, but I know he was there in March of 1987, recording the first VO show on Jazz 88.
  • A fantastic Jazz Live interview with Chuchito, the first I've ever done through a translator. Thanks Laskar!! And I got most of it on video...we'll see how that comes out.
  • Being able to pull Chris Springer, host of Jazz 88's Saturday 1pm show Latin Grooves on stage before the show. A great show, a great host, and great Latin Jazz on Jazz 88.3!
  • A harrowing start to the show, with Chuchito and band playing about 30 seconds past the 8 pm radio start, but Leo saving the day, so I'm told, by fading in the last 30 seconds of the 'warm-up tune', the crowd going crazy, and me with my "Live, from the Seville Theatre...". I think we pulled it off.
  • Harrowing #2 with Chuchito talking an unexpected 2 minute break (seemed like an eternity) at the 9pm station-ID, while I soft-shoe'd an unscripted walk through the Jazz 88 website and reasons to support Jazz 88! Maybe we got a member or 2 out of it!?!
  • Running into Junior in the parking lot after the show and snapping our only picture together.

What a great night!! And we've got the legendary Cedar Walton for the next show....who is he playing with? I've got to start writing out my questions now!!

    Chuchito's Band And More

Jazz in his genes | The San Diego Union-Tribune

For Tuesday's performance, Valdés, now based in Cancún, Mexico, will be joined by exceptional Cuban-born, Los Angeles-based rhythm section tandem of bassist Jorge “El Saguaâ€ Pérez, who has played widely with the Buena Vista Social Club, and trap drummer Raúl Piñeda, best known for his work in Síntesis, Cuba's first progressive rock band and with Chucho Valdés.

And word it that it's actually going to be a quartet, with a saxophonist who also serves as interpreter (important to us conducting interviews and such!).
